The Indestructible Jens Voight

There's a profile of Jens Voight over on the Mens' Health site. He talks about what it means to be a domestique and pro cyclist for 16 years:

Obviously, this sport is a very hard sport. If you only do it for the money you're not going to last very long. It's too hard to be a mercenary. You have to have passion inside of you. Passion in me feels like a high, full burning flame--it's not a tiny spark in the dark. It's still burning and I still love it. I'm not winning races like when I was on top, but I believe I'm still able to do my job, be among the best and be a valuable teammate. Every year you get a contract, you know that people still think you're worth it. And it's cool to hang out with all of your boys, get a shiny new bike every year and all of this equipment. You get paid to stay healthy and fit. When I'm riding a quiet little country road, I heard birds tweeting and think, I'm in my office now. How cool is that?

Favorite Jens saying? "Shut up, legs!"

Hello Nano

Apple's running an iPod Nano replacement program for first generation Nanos. Apparently their batteries are prone to overheating. I know I bought a nano years ago for Nike+ use, but wasn't sure what generation it was--first or second. Ended up using my iPod touch for the same purposes. Dug up the Nano and plugged it in and found the serial number after it finally had enough energy to boot up. Turns out I do have a first generation one. I must have bought it right when the second-generation ones came out. Looking forward to getting a new one, although I'm not sure what I'll do with it.

The Great E-Mail Migration

Taking a big step today and migrating away from Eudora as my e-mail client. I'm giving Postbox a try. I've been with Eudora since 1992 or so, since version 2.x I think—I can't find a release date listing online.

The process is a little complicated. I'm importing everything into Apple Mail on Snow Leopard, then moving messages (63K+) over to Postbox, then I'll create accounts in Postbox and start with new folders and filters there. No idea how attachments will work out. Guess we'll see.

Decided to move over before Rosetta support gets dropped from OS X in 10.7.

Here goes....

2010 Musical Advent Calendar Intro

So I got it in my head to do a 25-day musical Advent calendar of sorts. I know of only a few people who do this these days on their weblog, though I know there's probably a lot of it about. I'm also seeing people posting similar things on Facebook. I'll post a link to a Christmas/holiday song or two each day, perhaps with a little commentary. After all, there's boatload of content on YouTube just ripe for embedding.

I'll post here and probably duplicate things over on Facebook, as that's where all the kids are these days.

Alex Lifeson Interview

The Lehigh Valley News has an interview with Alex that covers work on the new album and memories of making Moving Pictures. An excerpt:

Lifeson says the band has six songs pretty much ready to go and three others almost done. The group plans to write at least a couple of additional songs after the tour. At this point, the CD is shaping up to be a musically varied work.

"There is the epic song, 'Clockwork Angels,' which is really taking shape. It's a multi-parted piece, very dynamic," Lifeson says. "Then there's some stuff that's very melodic and on the softer side, on acoustic, with a strong melody. So there's great diversity there. Honestly, I can't wait until we start really working on these songs. We've sort of got them to the stage where Geddy and I were happy with the arrangements and then Neil kind of comes in and starts working on his drum arrangements, and they go from there. So they're sort of in that pre-drum stage right now, and it's great to see them come to life."

Really looking forward to this!
